DAY SEVEN

Extra, extra, read all about it…..the CRASH is here. Counts in the basement: WBC is.1; HCT is 23.5; Platelets 36. They’re bringing in the big guns now–bags of platelets and packed red cells. I still feel pretty good, no nausea and my big treat this morning…Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Starbucks…ahhhh, Life is Good…..Gary

DAY SIX

Great day today—better day tomorrow. Tried some Zofrin for nausea and it worked like a charm. Had a hamburger!. I have a feeling we’re getting closer to the crash. Scary thought to know that all your defenses are defenseless. Looking forward to even more goodies tomorrow…..Gary

DAY FIVE

Energy level not bad—all considered. White count down to.2 and platelets down to 52. Low platelets mean bleeding so I am now brushing my teeth with sponges. Another major event for the day–biofeedback to lower my stress and hmmmm, lets see, I wonder where all the stress comes from? Still have some nausea today and …

DAY FOUR

My how times flies when you’re having a good time! It’s Sunday already and Father’s Day at UNC-CH. Mel and Matt visited Gary today. He is feeling much better today–very little nausea and no Ativan so far and it’s almost 1:00. Still eating popsicles and had rice krispies for breakfast. His white count is down …

DAY THREE

Gary is on a steady diet of Atavin today for nausea. The side effect is tiredness so he has been sleeping on and off. He has decided to forgo breakfast and lunch today in favor of a grape popsicles and ice chips. He says everything has an odd smell. His white count is down to.7 …

DAY TWO

Day two started off better than day one. The dex shakes and edginess seemed to be gone and Gary ate a good breakfast, made a few phone calls, showered, shaved and was soon tired. According to his bloodwork, white cell count is just starting to drop. So now he is wistfully looking at his bike …

DAY ONE

The no brain day. Can’t think because I am coming off the dex. Got my first haircut today, the kind that’s long on the sides and blocked in the back—not really, reminds me of my navy days. A little tired, upset stomach but still eating my meals. Going to make it short, gotta take a …

DAY 0

Today is day 0 as I got my stem cells back today. The stem cell folks came in with a two tier cart loaded with thermos containers, a hot dog cooker, neatly wrapped packages–I thought we were going to have a tailgate party! It was fairly uneventful getting the cells put back in but the …

MY NEW FRIEND

Just found out I have a new friend who will be with me day and night until I leave the hospital. I’ve named her “My Old Bag”. She’ll be taking care of my fluids needs, and in an unforseen emergency, antibiotics, and other sweet drips. She doesn’t nag but gently beeps at me if I’m …

ROOM WITH A VIEW

Life is good. Got a room with 2 windows and can see some trees, had a great lunch, and nestled in for the next three weeks—I’m on Paris Hilton lockdown. Lots of visitors–the electocardiogram, chest xray (thank goodness for something painless), the nurses, nurse manager, dietary, social worker, and waiting for the doctors. Chemo at …
